Look, I will not argue for the redeeming social value of 50 cent (or, is that fiddy sent?), but I do think that a lot of hip-hop/rap gets dismissed off-hand by a lot of people w/o anyone bothering to really listen. Now, I won't argue 50 is same type of griot as Chuck D or worthy of the appreciation of The Roots (one of the most important groups around) or lyrically interesting as Talib, but I do think that he represents a pretty accurate snapshot in some of his lyrics of his background and the truth of the streets. Does glamorizing the gang life and all that encompasses bother me? Yes. Does that mean they hype it to move more units? Often, of course. That said, I wouldn't dimiss off hand where such artists are coming from.

Why do we die at an early age? Our street is full of drive-by's and gansters of the wall. Shooting two pockets of paintballs. Some say they run the streets and we brush they fucking fore-head.What the hell happened to you? The red buick down the street is ready 4 action staring at my dipped dung.

So why don't you die at an early age, ja

50 cent
Stay out the way we using the g- unit while doing it. We running in to the beat Coming out the heat. Foo we here for a reason.
To kick yo ass.

But let me say one thing very clear - NONE Of it has ever moved me as much as this band:

Nor was I looking for one...

As with everything there is good and bad. At least with what I have heard it is more than mostly bad...

With that said I've tried to hear what is supposed to be the good of the genre and none of it struck me as anything I could possibly relate to. Elements here and there sure, but on the whole it really does nothing for me.

I understand the need to artistically speak about where one came from, or describe one's environment so that others can relate or join in on that feeling, etc, etc... but that doesn't mean I have to appreciate it.

And I can't agree with you more - I love me a 15+ minute '74 Eyes as much as the next person but I'll take an all less-than-3 minutes of Janie Jones any day of the week....

Cool - I wasn't trying to be a dick (that just comes naturally).

When JOTS visited my house, I had to show off my framed Sandinista poster; I also have a framed cover of London Calling next to my computer (not far from my Playbill for Jerry at the Lunt Fontane). SUffice it to say, I love The Clash.

And that Freedom Hall show you mentioned is one of the first "tapes" I ever got.

Nice!

Funny how The Clash were toying with all of those early elements of rap around the time of Sandinista - Magnificent Seven, etc... It's no London Calling, but certainly a favorite.

I located some orginal adverts from British trade mags on eBay and bought 'em up a while ago... Got a cool one for the Clash City Rockers single and London Calling...

Here's what he currently has...
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&frpp=25&from=R10&satitle=clash&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sadis=200&fpos=18015&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&seller=1&sass=rockarc1&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=

Look at all of his items for some cool stuff.

6-18-74 is probably my favorite show (if that's possible)... 2-24-74 is close second.
